Some Basics

Hi, Thanks for take a look at my site and this page. So you want to know a bit more about me? OK, first the basics. I’m a 30 year old programmer/network administrator from Somerset, England. I’m engaged to Jo and I’m sure you’ll find some pictures of her somewhere on this site.

Work

I started life as an accountant, but as exciting as it was digging though farmers filthy invoices I soon learned that this was no way to make money. My first proper IT jobs was working on the 24×7 helpdesk at PSINet in Cambridge. After working there for a year or so, I met Jo who ironically was from my home town of Yeovil. I decided to move back there and found a job with NTL in their Network Management Centre. The commute to NTL each day was a 140 mile round trip which very nearly killed me on several occasions. My next job was with Tenon Group where I was in charge of all things Unix, Cisco and anything else without a GUI! I stayed at Tenon for around 4 years until I joined ITC, a network security company based in London. I have a CCNA and an RHCE. I am also an experienced programmer mainly writing in PHP and Perl with Javascript and MySQL as my backend database.

Geek Spot

No geek site would be complete without a little tour of my servers at home. All my servers is crappy old desktops that no-one wanted any more. I like to think I’m giving them a new home and a new life.

zippy.deaconsworld.org.uk

Zippy is my main web & file server, but also runs authoritative DNS for deaconsworld.org.uk and a few other domains. Zippy also handles DHCP for the network and collects syslogs for the rest of the network. Zippy is currently on Fedora core 4

george.deaconsworld.org.uk

George is my mail server. SMTP is provided by Exim and CourierIMAP is used for pop3 and imap. SquirrelMail provides webmail and mailboxes are in maildir format. George is also my main MySQL server for the network. George is getting a bit long in the tooth now and is still running Core 1

fw.deaconsworld.org.uk

No prizes for guessing that fw is my firewall. Although fw.deaconsworld.org.uk is really old crappy IBM desktop (PII 400Mhz!) which I rescued from a skip it still runs iptables perfectly. In fact it’s CPU utilisation is currently 0.00! I’d love to see M$ ISA running perfectly on a PII 400!

Dev1 is my development server. It’s a bit of a playground for anything I’m doing at the time.
